About Places

City Wall; The first breach of the walls was by the Fourth Crusade in 1204 the second by the cannons and troops of Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror in 1453.

Golden Horn; As a natural and extremely secures harbor, the Golden Horn has played an important role in the development of Istanbul. The inlet separates the European shore into two. It is approximately 8 km long and widest part is the entrance from the Bosphorus. Two streams drain into this inlet at its far end.

Spice Bazaar; There are several documents suggesting the name of the bazaar was first "New Bazaar". However, due to the fact that many spices were imported via Egypt in the Ottoman period, the name "Misir Carsisi" was favoured by the public. The structure was designed by the chief court architect Koca Kasim Aga, but completed by architect Mustafa in 1660. The air here is filled with the enticing aromas of cinnamon, caraway, saffron, mint, thyme and every other conceivable herb and spice.

Cruise on the Bosphorus; The Bosporus or Bosphorus also known as the Istanbul Strait (Turkish: Istanbul Bogazi), is a strait that forms the boundary between the European part (Thrace) of Turkey and its Asian part (Anatolia). It is one of the Turkish Straits, along with the Dardanelles. The world's narrowest strait used for international navigation, it connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara (which is connected by the Dardanelles to the Aegean Sea, and thereby to the Mediterranean Sea). An amazing cruise between the two continents, EUROPA and ASIA, along the Bosphorus by the Dolmabahce and Beylerbeyi Palaces, wooden villas and mansions up to the Rumeli Fortress near the Black Sea.

Pierre Loti; is the pen name of French author Julien Viaud who lived in Istanbul in late 19th. century. He soon adopted Ottoman life style and very much liked spending time at cafes on Goldern Horn. He wrote his first novel "Aziyade" in Istanbul (1876). Turkish people liked this love story very much and the name of its hero is given to a cafe at Eyup. The name "Pierre Loti" is also given to his favorite cafe. Now, all district on the hill where the cafe is siutated is known as Pierre Loti. This place is a very popular among tourists. It has a lovely view of Golden Horn. New cafes, small hotels are built around Piere Loti in last years. Very recently (November 2005), a cable-car started to work between Eyup and Pierre Loti. It is very good idea to visit Eyup Sultan Mosque and then take the cable car and have a rest in Piere Loti. If you don't want to take the cable car, you can climb the hill passing through the famous Eyup cemetery.
